-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary: A year after Dinothunder, Kim has an accident that brings Tommy and her together again. Can they overcome past or will they let it haunt them forever? Will Tommy be able to help Kim fly again?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jason Scott paced around in a room at the Angel Memorial Hospital. He turned to look at the brunette that was laying in the bed. He wanted to cry so bad but he needed to be strong. She looked so helpless laying there with the neck brace and the monitors hooked up to her. She still wasn't out of the woods yet. The doctor was concerned that a piece of her vertebrae had snapped in her neck and was seriously considering surgery. She hadn't woke up since since she was brought in. That was a week ago.
He snapped back to reality when Dr. Jacobs walked into the room. “Hey, Jason, how are you?” he said as he shook Jason's hand.
Jason looked over at Kim. “I guess as good to be expected. So, what's the verdict, Doc? Does she need the surgery?”
Dr, Jacobs had a solemn look on his face. “Well, the CT scan definitely determine that the vertebrae is chipped. The piece did break off but is unfortunately stuck and will need to be removed before I can repair it. There is a problem, though.”
Jason looked back at the doctor. “What kind of problem?”
“Well, since Kim is unable to consent to the surgery, someone that has medical power has to sign for it.”
“Well, then, give me the paper and I'll sign for it.”
Dr. Jacobs went quiet. “You see, Jason, you can't sign the paper. I was looking over her medical records and discovered three names that she gave us is case she was unable to consent to treatment. The first two are Ken Hart and Caroline Dumas.”
“Oh. Well, that might be a problem. You see, Kim hasn't seen her dad in about 12 years and her mom lives over in France and it would take her days to get here. I mean, I can call her and tell her, but I can tell from the expression on your face that the surgery needs to be done soon.” The doctor nodded. Jason took and deep breath and asked the question that he probably already knew the answer too. “Doc, who's the third person on the record?”
“Well, it seems that she put down a Tommy Oliver as the third person.” Jason looked at Kim and then back at the doctor. “Don't worry. I already know about the past between the two, but Kim was adamant about putting him down. She said that she still loved him and that he would make the right decisions. So, do you have a phone number for him? She wasn't sure where he was, but knew that you would be able to get a hold of him. That's why you were down as an emergency contact.”
Jason rubbed the top of his head. “Actually, I do know how to get a hold of him. He lives right over in Reefside. He's not going to like this. They haven't seen each other in about 9 years.” Jason looked over at Kim and then back over at Dr. Jacobs. “Do you mind if I call him? It might be better if he hears it from me. I know he's gonna crack when I tell him.”
“Yeah, that's no problem. I can put the surgery off for at least three days. I need a decision by then from Tommy. If I remember right, he didn't leave hardly at all the last time that she was here. Tell him if he wants, we can set her up in a private room so he can stay with her.”
“Thank, Doc,” replied Jason as he shook the doctor's hand. “I'll mention it to him.”
“Take care, Jason,” Dr. Jacobs said as he headed out of the room.
Jason walked over to Kim's bedside and leaned over. “Well, Firebird, looks like you're getting your wish. I just wish he didn't have to see you like this,” he whispered as he placed a kiss on her forehead. He settled down into the recliner and grabbed his cell phone from his pocket. As he was getting ready to open the phone, he noticed a piece of paper on the floor by her bags. He leaned over and picked them up and noticed that one of them had his name on it. He open the envelope and noticed that it was a letter from Kim.
Hey big brother,
If you are reading this, it means something as happened to me. I had a feeling with as much as my mind as been racing around a lot lately, that I probably would probably have an accident. That's why I wrote this letter to you. Don't worry about me, Rex. You know that I am a fighter. Hell, I survived Rita and Lord Zedd and even the incident in Florida. Listen, Rex, I need you to do me a favor. If the reason that you reading this is cause I am in the hospital, I want you to call Tommy. I know that even after nine years, he would want to be here. To be honest, I would like him here. I still love him, Rex, and I don't think that I can ever stop. He is my heart and my soul. I just hope that he feels the same way. In the other envelope is a letter to Tommy. I want you to make sure that he reads it. After the last one that I sent him, you may have to do a lot of convincing to get him too. I just hope that he can forgive this pink crane and we can fly together again. I know that I told you this already but don't worry. If I know Tommy and you, I am in good hands. Just make sure to bring me my WHITE KNIGHT! I love you, Rex.
Thanks Goldie,
Kimberly
Jason smiled as he finished reading the letter. Now, he didn't feel guilty about calling Tommy. She wanted him here. He leaned over and placed a small kiss on her cheek. “Don't worry, little sis. I'll make sure he's here, even if I have to kick his ass and drag him here.” He brushed the hair from in front of her face and then proceeded to head out into the hallway to call Tommy. He went down to the waiting room to find two very familiar girls there clad in yellow. He sat down by them and the Asian proceeded to put her arms around him.
“So, Jason, what's the verdict?” asked Trini as Aisha was waiting patiently.
“Well, the doctor definitely said the vertebrae is chipped and will need surgery. The only problem is cause of Kim being unconscious, they need a signature of the person that has her medical power of attorney.”
Aisha was in shock with what Jason had just told them. “Well, I guess we better call her mom and let her know.”
“Well, that's the problem. Caroline would need to be he day after tomorrow to sign the paper and there is no way that she would be here in time. On top of that, no one know where her dad is, either.”
“Jason, what are we going to do, then? We don't know of anyone else that would have it,” Aisha said as she leaned back in her chair.
“That's what I thought until Dr. Jacobs said there was a third person listed in her records that could sign the paper. I just have to get the guts to call him and let him know.”
Trini looked at her fiancee. “Jason, who do you have to call? You make it sound like you know him really well.”
Jason looked at his fiancee and his friend. “Well, I do know him. He is my best friend, after all.”
Aisha sighed. “Oh, man. He's gonna take it really hard. It about killed him when she was here the last time. I wonder how he's gonna take it, especially since they haven't seen each other in over nine years.”
Jason grabbed Trini's hand and looked over at Aisha. “I don't know, Ish, but I have to call him. Kim needs this surgery and he's the only one that can consent to it. She even left me a letter asking me to call him. She wants him here.”
“Well, I guess we better call him, huh?” replied Trini. She stood up from her chair and looked at Aisha. “Hey, let's go get some food so we can give Jason some time to talk to him.” Trini looked back over at her fiancee. “Babe, you want anything?” Jason shook his head no. Trini gave him a kiss on his cheek and the girls left the waiting room, headed for the cafeteria.
Jason pulled out his cell phone and took a deep breath. He remembered that Tommy was in school right now but knew it was his free period right now. Now was as a good time to call him. He opened his cell and dialed the number that he knew by heart.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Thomas Oliver was sitting at his desk grading papers from his last period. He was happy to finally have a quiet life. The year before, the Dinos and him were able to beat Mesogog and as an effect, drain the Dino gems. He was glad that things were finally normal for once in his life. He finished up grading his papers and put them aside. He reached into his desk to grab his lesson plans for the next class when he felt the vibration of his cell phone. He reached into his pocket and looked at it. The caller id read Jason's name. He opened the phone and said, “Hey, bro, what's up?”
“Hey, bro, not much here. What you up too?”
“Oh, nothing really major. Just getting my lesson plans ready for my next class.”
Jason took a deep breath. “Sounds like fun. Hey, listen bro. There's a reason that I called you. Are you sitting down?”
Tommy was starting to get worried. “Bro, you're starting to scare me a little. What's wrong with you? Come on, man, talk to me.”
“Well, there is something wrong but not with me. You see, the reason that I'm calling is cause....um...” Jason voice was starting to crack up. After a few seconds, Jason couldn't control it anymore.
“Jason, come man, talk to me,” Tommy said almost in a panic. He keep trying for the next few seconds to get through to Jason until he heard a female's voice on the other end that he knew to be Trini's “Jason, if you can hear me, give the phone to Trini for me.”
After a few seconds, a female voice came through on the other end. “Tommy, you still there?” asked Trini.
“Yeah, I'm still here. Trini, what the hell is going on. Jason tried to tell me then he completely broke down. Tri, why do I have a feeling that I'm not going to like this?”
Trini took a beep breath. “Because I know that you're not, O fearless leader. We're calling you from the hospital in Angel Grove.”
Tommy was in full panic mode now. “Trini, what the hell is going on?”
Trini didn't want to be the one to him about Kim but she knew that she needed to too. “Tommy, first off, it's not one of us. We're here cause of someone else. A certain someone that wants you here with her. Tommy, Kim's had an accident.”
Tommy felt his knees go weak. **Did she just say Kim?** He felt a knot starting to form in his stomach. “Trini, what happened? Tell me everything. I need to know.”
“Tommy, first off, she still loves you. She's been trying for the past few weeks to come up with a way to see you and tell you that herself. She figured that practicing would help her sort through everything. From what I know, she tried to do back flip and completely lost her footing. She fell hard to the floor and hit her head really hard. That was over a week ago. She still hasn't woke up. Jason thinks that you might be the only one that might be able to bring her out of it. Tommy, there's also something else. When she fell, she almost broke her neck. The doctor did a CT scan and discovered that a vertebrae in her neck is chipped and the piece is lodged in her neck. She has to have surgery to correct it. The only problem is that with her being unconscious, we have to have someone sign the consent forms.”
Tommy sat in his chair running his hands through his hair. “Have you tried calling her parents?”
“Jason already though of that. He doesn't want to call her dad cause he hasn't gave a damn about Kim for the 12 years of her life. He could call her mom but it would take a few days to get here and the doctor wants to operate by the day after tomorrow. Dr. Jacobs told us that there is a third person on her chart that can sign the papers. Tommy, we need you here. You're the only one that can sign the papers. She really must still love you if she willing to put her life in your hands.”
Tommy couldn't believe what Trini just told him. He looked up at the clock and noticed that he had 15 minutes before the period was up. He got up out of his seat and started to get his things together. “Hey, Trini, tell Jason that I am on my way. I should be there within the next hour or so.” He could tell that Trini was trying not to cry. “Trini, everything will be ok, I promise. Tell my pink princess I'm on my way. I'll see you guys, soon, OK?”
“Ok, Tommy, see you when you get here.” The line was quiet for a few seconds. “Tommy, aren't you at school?”
“Yeah, but the principal owes me a favor. Trust me, I'll be there soon. I need to get going.”
“Ok, Tommy, see you when you get here. Be careful. Bye.”
“Bye,” he said as he exited the classroom. When he reached the office, he noticed Elise Randall coming out of her office. “Hey, Elise, can I talk to you for a sec?”
The brown haired woman, who used to be Elsa and had a new life thanks to Tommy and the other rangers, turned to him. She walked over to him and asked, “Tommy, what's wrong?”
“I need a huge favor. I need an extended leave of absence. There's no telling how long I'm going to be gone.”
“Yeah, sure, no problem. I'll see if Anton doesn't mind taking over your classes. What the emergency?'
“Well, you remember me telling you about the gang from high school?” Elise nodded. “Well, I used to date one of them and she had a pretty bad accident and fell of the balance beam. She's in a coma and needs to have surgery on her neck. I really don't want to leave her side with all this going on. I still love her too much.”
Elise smiled. She knew what Kim meant to Tommy. “Well, then, you better get going. Tell Jason and the girls I said hi. Call me and keep me updated.”
“Thank you so much, Elise. Don't worry, if I don't call you, one of the others will.” He place a small peck on her cheek and ran out of the school.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trini headed for Kim's room. Once she was inside, she walked over to the bed. She brushed the hair out of her face. “Well, pinkie, it seems that you got your way. Your white knight is on his way. That man must still love you to drop everything for you.” Trini could feel the tears in her eyes and gently wiped her eyes. She leaned over to kiss her on the forehead. “We need you here, Kim. Please, you have to get stronger for everyone, especially Tommy. Tommy's tried to play tough when I was on the phone with him, but I could tell it was killing him on the inside. Just please get stronger. We love you.” Trini wiped a tear from her cheek when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around to see Jason standing there.
He wrapped his arms around her. “I hope that she's ok. By the way, thanks for taking care of Tommy for me.”
“You're welcome, hun. He said that he'll be here in about an hour or so. I just hope he's prepared when he sees her like this. I just know that he's going to crack when he sees her.” Trini could tell that Jason was wanting to tell her something but was afraid too. “Jason, what's wrong? You look like you're losing your best friend.”
Jason knew that he couldn't keep it from Trini any longer. “When you came in here, Dr. Jacobs came and saw me. He said that when he was looking over her last MRI, he noticed some swelling on her brain.” He could feel the tears on his cheeks. “Tri, there might be a possibility that she might not wake up. How can I tell Tommy that? He's my best friend and I have to break his heart.” Jason slid down the wall and pulled his knees up to his chest.
Trini knelt on the floor beside her fiancee. All she could do was take him her arms and hug him. She gently swayed back and forth for a few minutes until she calmed him down. “Tell you what, Jason. When Tommy gets here, we both will tell him. You're not going to do it alone.”
Jason looked up at Trini and nodded his head. All he could do was nod his head ok. Trini helped him up to his feet and he slowly made his way over to Kim. He leaned over and placed a kiss on her forehead. “Please, get better. We all miss you, Firebird,” he whispered. He made his way over to Trini and they quietly left the room.
When they reached the waiting room, they were greeted by the grief stricken faces of all their friends. Jason couldn't believe that everyone was here. He looked over at Trini, who had a smile on her face. “Aisha and me made a few calls when we were in the cafeteria. Luckily for us, everyone was in Angel Grove at the time for the reunion.” Jason smiled as he sat down in the chairs.
Tanya looked around. She looked over at Trini and asked, “Aren't we missing someone? Where's the fearless leader at?”
“He's on his way right now. I got off the phone with him about half a hour ago. He should be here in about an hour.”
“Oh, ok. So, what happened to Kim?” asked Tanya. She knew that was the question on everyone's mind.
Jason took a deep breath and looked at everyone. “She fell off the balance beam and almost broke her neck. There is a piece of her vertebrae that chipped off and is still lodged in her neck. The doctor is waiting for approval to go in surgically to remove it. The one thing that he is worried about, though, is the fact that she hasn't woke up yet since she has been here. She's been in a coma for little over a week.” Jason looked around at their friends and noticed that everyone had tears in their eyes. Jason lowered his and took another deep breath. “Guys, there's something else, too.”
Everyone looked at Jason, who had tears in his eyes. Billy looked at Trini and then over at Jason. He asked the question that everyone dreaded. “Jason, what else is wrong with her?”
“Well, after the initial shock wore off, we finally called Tommy and told him about her being in the hospital and fracturing her neck. Well, after Trini went into her room to visit, Dr. Jacobs came and spoke to me. He didn't want to say anything with Trinity around. When he was looking over her charts and the MRI that she had last night, he noticed a spot on her scan that was abnormal. As he examined it closer, he noticed that the spot was swelling on her brain. The next thing that he said is what broke me down completely. He's not sure if she will ever wake up.” The tears were coming full force down his face now. “The only thing that Tommy knows is that she injured her neck. He doesn't know about the swelling on her brain yet.”
Zack lowered his head. “Oh, man.”
Katherine was wiping the tears from her eyes. “He's going to lose it when he finds out. He barely kept it together when she was here the last time.”
Billy looked at his girlfriend and put his arm around her. “I know. He was so distraught.” He looked over at his friend and asked, “Jason, do you need us around when you tell him?”
“Yeah, it might be the best thing. You know how he's going to get when he finds out. It's going to take all of us to calm him down. I just hope that we're ready to deal with this.”
Kat placed an assuring hand on Jason's shoulder. “Don't worry. We'll all be here for Kim.”
“Thanks, guys. I know that Kim would appreciate all of you being here for her.”
“Well, isn't that what friends are for,” said Tanya with a smile on her face.
